West Coast have scored the last two goals of their Super Netball clash against Sunshine Coast to prevail 56-55 and consign the defending premiers to their third straight loss to start the season.
The Fever kept their composure to close out the game at USC Stadium on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday night and with the tight victory, maintain their undefeated start to the season.
The key match-up was between West Coast's star goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler and the Lightning's English international defender Geva Mentor.
Mentor was able to slow down the classy Jamaican, who shot 39 goals out of 44 attempts.
At the other end, Lightning sharp shooter Caitlin Bassett made 33 shots out of 39 with 85% accuracy.
The Fever raced to an early three-goal lead before the Lightning - playing their first home game of the season - fought back to take a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sunshine Coast then opened up a four-goal lead before Fowler began to assert herself, but the sides went to the main break level at 29-29.
With Courtney Bruce dominant for the Fever, with four intercepts during the third quarter, they grabbed a 39-37 advantage.
The Lightning bagged a bonus point as they led heading into the last quarter but they didn't have the firepower to finish off the job.
"We got to look for the positives and see what we can do for next week," Lightning coach Noeline Taurua said.
"It is early days but we just got to keep our head down and keep working and push ourselves."
