A newly released trailer gave fans a first look at the translated version of the fantasy anime ahead of its UK release on December 26.
However, viewers were left surprised by the actor's voicing of the Heron in the trailer, with many agreeing that Pattinson sounded unrecognisable from his other work.
"Pattinson as the Heron is killing me," one person wrote on Twitter/X. "That does not sound like him wow."
"Robert Pattinson being a rare case of an actor doing voice work and being completely unrecognisable," a second person tweeted.
While another added: "I love that Robert Pattinson really went all out for his voice role in The Boy and the Heron and is doing an insane voice for it.
"He always understands the assignment and delivers on it. Give him more voice roles after this. He knows what he’s doing."
Miyazaki's first feature film in over 10 years, The Boy and the Heron tells the story of Mahito Maki, a young boy who travels a mysterious world inhabited by the living and the dead after encountering a talking heron.
Alongside Pattinson as the heron, the English language voice cast includes Florence Pugh, Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Mark Hamill, Karen Fukuhara, Willem Dafoe and Luca Padovan.
The Boy and The Heron will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on December 26.
