An exhausted Rory McIlroy threw his 3-wood onto the New Jersey Turnpike at The Northern Trust

Rory McIlroy sounds both extremely tired and frustrated headed into the BMW Championship this season.

Not only does he think he’s played too much golf recently, something that’s weighing him down headed into the second of three FedExCup Playoffs events, but McIlroy revealed Wednesday that he actually threw his 3-wood toward the freeway next to Liberty National on Monday out of frustration.

“I threw my 3-wood onto the New Jersey Turnpike off the 9th hole yesterday, or on Monday, and so I was without a 3-wood coming here [to the BMW Championship,” he said, via Golf Digest.

“I mightn’t have reached the road but I threw it into the trees off the ninth tee at Liberty National, so if someone wants to go get a 3-wood, there’s one in there somewhere.”

McIlroy finished T43 at The Northern Trust on Monday after posting a final-round 70. He started on the back nine in the round — which was delayed by a day due to Hurricane Henri — and threw his club after posting a bogey on the par-5 eighth hole, his second-to-last of the day.

McIlroy is currently No. 28 in the FedExCup standings, which currently qualifies him for the season-ending Tour Championship next week. He opened with +2200 odds to win the BMW Championship on BetMGM, well behind favorite Jon Rahm at +600.

McIlroy sounds exhausted headed into BMW Championship

While the end of the Tour season is in sight, McIlroy sounds like he is more than ready for a break.

“I think I feel like a lot of the guys right now — a little jaded, a little tired,” McIlroy said, via Golf Digest. “End of the season, there’s been a lot of golf. Yeah, so a lot of travel.

“I’m just sort of getting through it, to be honest. I’m going day by day and just trying to get through it as best I can and try to make it to next week … Energy levels are somewhat sort of trying to dig deep at this point. [I just want to] try and keep going and put in a good finish this week to make sure I’m in Atlanta next week.”

While that’s not something you necessarily want to hear at the end of the season, it certainly makes sense.

The 32-year-old has been extremely busy — and all over the globe — over the past two months. After a T7 finish at the U.S. Open in San Diego, McIlroy played in the British Open in England and then finished T4 at the Olympics in Japan. The very next week he was back in Tennessee at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

He’s also a new father, after he and his wife gave birth to their daughter almost a year ago. McIlroy said Wednesday that he actually flew home to Florida from New York on Monday night just so he could spend time with his family before taking off to Baltimore on Tuesday morning.

While a spot in the Tour championship isn’t guaranteed, as he’s right on the cusp of qualifying, McIlroy said he’s more than ready for the break between the Tour Championship and the Ryder Cup — which is set to take place next month at Whistling Straits.

"No matter if you're in Europe or the States, especially, I haven't missed a [Ryder Cup] session yet,” he said, via ESPN. “So, say I play five sessions again, yeah, it's a really long week. So the two weeks off after the Tour Championship are going to be well-needed, and I'll go in there nice and refreshed and ready to give it my all."
