5 hacks for starting and maintaining your own at-home gym

Home gym necessities don’t have to break the bank or be an eyesore.

Whether you’re just trying to add in a little bit of movement during the workday or you’re trying to save money on gym fees, having an at-home gym is an easy achievement — even in a small space.

In The Know’s Phoebe Zaslav tested out her theory that having a really organized setup for your at-home gym can help it integrate seamlessly into even the tiniest of apartments.

“The key to organization is to have a place for everything and to keep everything in its place,” Phoebe said.

An added bonus of having an organized, designated area for your workout gear is that it becomes a little “motivation station.” Mentally, you’ve reserved this part of your apartment to be for working out and it doesn’t clash with where you work or where you sleep so you won’t get distracted.

For heavy weights, Phoebe recommended using a magazine rack.

“I swapped out the books and put in my 5 lb and 10 lb weights, and also put in my sliders for pilates classes that I take,” Phoebe explained. “This gives it like an antique look — kind of hiding that it’s gym equipment.”

For looser gym equipment, like her ankle weights, resistance bands and small hand weights, Phoebe stored them in a clean shoe container.

“I swapped out a pair of my favorite heels because I’m not wearing those anytime soon,” she said. “I like having all of my looser gym equipment in here because it keeps it really compact and I know where everything is.”

For items like yoga mats, foam rollers and barre balls, Phoebe went with a storage cubby that she had been using to store extra blankets in.

“This really felt like an actual gym to me,” she said. “When I look at it, I feel super motivated.”

To really finalize the space, Phoebe added some water bottles on top of everything.

“The way to keep it organized best is once you pick out equipment and you do your workout and you finish it, put everything back where you got it,” Phoebe said. “If you make it a habit to just put everything back in its place, it will stay organized.”
