Cardiff Devils were convincing 6-3 winners over Belfast Giants in the first of a double header at the SSE Arena.
Sloppy defending saw Devils go 4-0 up inside the second period with goals from Cole Sanford, Cole Ully, Evan Mosey and Tyler Busch.
Oliver Cooper and Ben Lake clawed two back for Giants either side of a Trevor Cox goal.
Josh Roach brought the hosts back to 5-3, before Ully claimed his second.
Devils are now two points clear in second place, but 16 behind leaders Sheffield Steelers, although they do have two games in hand.
Giants drop to fourth, a point behind Guildford Flames in third.
Giants will look to put in a better performance when they host Devils on Sunday.
