Drake meme helps TikTokers show off their favorite pairings

Drake continues to stay in the news, especially during his “It’s All a Blur Tour.” Recently he made headlines for going after a man who tried to steal a female fan’s towel during one of his Los Angeles dates. While TikTok got a rise out of seeing that video, users are obsessed with the rapper for something he did in the booth rather than onstage.

On July 21, On the Radar Radio, a New York-based platform hosted by Gabe P (@gabepnyc), premiered a music video for Drake and U.K. rapper Central Cee’s freestyle performance. It also debuted at No. 80 on the Billboard Hot 100, which was a first for Central Cee.

The song, which is now on streaming services as “On the Radar Freestyle,” features one verse from each rapper, with Drake going first.

At the beginning of the song, Drake starts ad-libbing before the beat comes in and says, “You know what it is/It’s a madness and badness, combination” with a Caribbean accent. In the days following the release, fans latched on to Drake’s accented ad-libs and have now made it the audio for a new slideshow trend on TikTok.

In the new trend, TikTokers use the first two slides to show things they like separately. These photos are synced with the “madness” and “badness” lyrics. Then when Drake says “combination,” the third slide appears with the finished, combined product of the first two pictures.

Originally the sound came from a video of someone joking about their stomach problems after eating dairy, but now the audio has over 30,000 posts credited to it, with a majority of them taking part in this trend.

TikTokers have been able to unite in the comment section and celebrate their joint appreciation for certain items, whether it’s drinks, clothing trends or a food dish.

“Shirley temples will always be my go to,” wrote @alyssarb in her caption. Pls first explain what the two things are that are being combined.

The original video has also circulated on Twitter as a popular meme.

Part of social media users’ infatuation with this sound is Drake’s accent. Over the years, the Toronto-born Drake has been accused of using different accents to fit the artist, song or era that he is in. People have said Drake has a Jamaican, British, Texas and Canadian accent.

He even doubled down on the Caribbean accent with his 2017 project More Life. When it comes to his U.K. accent, Drake has shown it off on previous freestyles for different outlets like Link Up TV and artist Headie One.

Since then, there have been several articles breaking down his speech patterns and his use of accents.

“I don’t feel he’s putting on a whole different dialect,” John Fleming, a speech and dialect coach, told Fader in 2015. “He’s just using a different voice for the different people he speaks to.

Drake’s use of accents has also come with different accusations, which he responded to earlier in his career.

“I hate that people think that me being into music from these kids who are trying to make it and trying to build a name for themselves, it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s some culture vulture.’ What does that even mean?” Drake told BBC 1Xtra Rap Show in 2019. “I don’t understand what that means. Would you rather me not acknowledge anything or support? That’s some real confused hater s***.”

Whether or not they’re highlighting Drake’s changing accent, TikTokers are using this clip as an opportunity to highlight their most beloved combinations.
