Doncic and Slovenia top Italy at basketball World Cup


Luka Doncic has ended his summer schedule with a win - and a familiar superstar performance at the basketball World Cup.

The Dallas Mavericks star finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, as Slovenia topped Italy 89-85 on Saturday in the seventh-place game.

Mike Tobey scored 12 points and Zoran Dragic added 10 for the Slovenians (5-3).

Marco Spissu scored 22 points for Italy (4-4), who lost their third game in a row in the tournament despite 16 points from Simone Fontecchio and 13 from Achille Polonara.

It was the final game before retirement for Italian veteran and former NBA player Gigi Datome, the team captain who had one point in 10 minutes.

Latvia won the fifth-place game against Lithuania 98-63 with Arturs Kurucs grabbing 20 points and 17 assists, Rolands Smits scoring 17.

Andrejs Grazulis added 12 for Latvia (6-2), who took command with a 28-9 third-quarter. They outscored Lithuania 48-15 on three-pointers.
