Dolphins sign Shaquem Griffin to one-year deal

The NFL's only one-handed player has a new home.

The Miami Dolphins have signed linebacker and special-teams ace Shaquem Griffin to a one-year deal on Friday. He visited the team this week and reportedly had interest from other clubs.

Griffin, 26, spent the past three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, collecting one sack, six QB hits and 25 tackles in 46 games.

A fifth-round draft pick in 2018, Griffin became the first known player with one hand. He lost his left hand at age 4 when it was amputated because of a congenital condition (amniotic band syndrome).

Griffin was one of the feel-good stories of the 2018 draft, landing in Seattle where he was teammates with his twin brother, Shaquill. They played together in college at UCF and were teammates in Seattle for the past three seasons as well.

Now both brothers are back in the state of Florida, with Shaq Griffin signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Shaquem landing with the Dolphins. Those teams are scheduled to meet in Jacksonville in Week 6.

Griffin isn't a lock to make the Dolphins' roster but his special-teams value and pass-rush ability will bolster his chances of making the team. Miami has put a high value on special teams since Brian Flores became head coach, and there otherwise appears to be a shortage of pass-rush sources on the roster.

Although Griffin's defensive snaps tailed off last season, he notched a sack against the Jets in Week 13. He also notched a fourth-quarter sack against Aaron Rodgers in the Seahawks' divisional-round playoff loss in Green Bay in the 2019 season.

His only career game against the Dolphins last season when Griffin collected two tackles on 21 defensive snaps, plus three more snaps on special teams.
