Warne living in a dream world: Arthur

By Martin Smith with AAP, Yahoo!7 January 31, 2013, 9:41 am

Australian coach Mickey Arthur says Shane Warne is living in a "dream world" after the spin king revealed his plan to reinvigorate Australian cricket.

On Wednesday, Warne released part one of a two-part 'manifesto' calling for a clean out of Australia's selectors and coaching panel.

Warne called for Arthur and chief selector John Inverarity to be sacked, and said Australia should pick the same XI for all three forms of the game.

Speaking to radio station 6PR, Arthur shrugged off Warne's criticism.

"He's living in a dream world," Arthur said of Warne.

"It's just not possible with the amount of time the players have at their disposal.

"He's living in a dream world. Clearly he's not up with the times."

In addition to calling for former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming to replace Arthur as coach, Warne wants ex-teammates Damien Martyn, Mark Waugh and Glenn McGrath to join the selection panel.

Warne says the coach shouldn't be a selector, but the skipper should be. Which means captain Michael Clarke would form part of a five-man panel including current selector Rod Marsh in Warne's world.

Marsh would be promoted to chairman of selectors.

Warne, 43, also wants his former Test skipper Mark Taylor to take over as Cricket Australia's chief executive of cricket.

"As an emotional, passionate and Australian cricket team supporter (and player) for the best part of 20 years (a proud one too) I, like many others am frustrated on many levels at present," Warne said on shanewarne.com.

"If we do nothing now, we will be where we were 30 years ago. There needs to be urgent action and a new strategy/plan put in place.

"The current set up is not working, as the results are showing!"

While he laughed off calls for his head, Arthur heavily criticised Warne's claim that the same XI should play in all three formats.

"The reality is that every player can’t play every game. It's just not possible," Arthur said.

"Players just don't have time to rest anymore.

"You want players to freshen up. Our quick bowlers don’t have any time to go through a conditioning program."

Warne's close mate Darren Lehmann, the Queensland coach, would be national assistant coach in Warne's world.

Ex-players Mike Hussey and Michael Bevan would be batting coaches with Merv Hughes and Bruce Reid in charge of bowling.

Warne also wants his mate and former Test skipper Ian Chappell as a consultant to the team.

Why is this guff on a cricket thread?! Australian cricket is at a standstill at the moment due to the massive number of retirements over the last few years. You can't replace 8/9 players just like that. The selectors should not have bowed to the whims of Warne and co those years ago and instead replaced them properly with the interestes of Aust cricket. However, administratively, I have no idea.

I do like Shane Warne as a cricketer only but I abhor his adulterous ways. This has firmly gripped western society where up to half of marriages fail and people like Ghost Hunter are forced to live with a morbidly obese boyfriend in Brian. Very sad , how very sad indeed. I will pray for you. Kindest regards Areel
