Michael Hussey needs 34 runs to become Australia's greatest run scorer in Tests between Australia and Sri Lanka.

The West Australian left hander will retire from Test cricket after the third Test which starts at the SCG on Thursday.

He follows Australian cricket greats Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer, Steve Waugh, Dennis Lillee, Rodney Marsh and Greg Chappell, who all played their final Tests at the SCG before retiring.

In seven Tests against Sri Lanka, Hussey has scored 942 runs at a phenomenal average of 117.75 - second behind Ricky Ponting (975 runs at 46.42 in 14 Tests).

Hussey holds the record of most Test centuries (five) in Tests between Australia and Sri Lanka. He scored 133 when playing Sri Lanka for the first time at the Gabba in 2007-08.

Hussey has also been a prolific run scorer in his seven SCG Tests where he has scored 700 runs at an average of 100.00, including three centuries.

In his last innings at the SCG against India last season, Hussey celebrated with an masterly innings of 150 not out and shared in an unbeaten fourth wicket partnership of 334 with Michael Clarke, who compiled a majestic 329 not out the highest Test innings score recorded at the SCG.

The Test is set to be a milestone for Hussey's WA team-mate Mitchell Johnson.

If selected to play, Johnson, who starred with bat and ball in Australia's crushing second Test victory over Sri Lanka at the MCG, will play his 50th Test for Australia.

It will be the first time Sri Lanka has played a Test at the SCG and they will become the eighth nation to do so.

Australia has played Sri Lanka in 25 Tests since their first Test encounter in Kandy in 1983, winning 16 Tests, losing one and drawing eight.
