Australian paceman Mitchell Starc said team-mate Peter Siddle is an inspiration to their young bowling attack.

Starc put in one of his best performances for his country to date during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Hobart, securing a five-wicket haul on the final day as the home side got over the line for a thrilling victory.

But the 22-year-old said he merely played a supporting role to pace attack leader Siddle.

"Sidds was outstanding again in Hobart and was pretty much the heart and soul of the attack," Starc said.

"Having him around the squad he's full of energy and he's always giving 100 percent, whether it be in the nets or in the field, and that drags the whole squad along."

Starc heaped even more praise on Siddle, comparing him to some of Australia's most inspirational players.

"When you have guys like Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey in the squad they bring so much energy and a different feel to the group," Starc said.

"I think Sidds is well on the way to being someone like that, who just lifts everyone up.

"When he's on bowling, you know something most likely is going to happen."

Australia's selectors will be pleased with Starc's fitness, especially with so many of their fast bowlers breaking down with injuries.

"Injuries are unfortunate, they seem to go hand in hand with fast bowling," Starc said.

"I'm looking after myself, doing all I can to stay on the park and make sure I'm recovering well and playing well."

With Mitchell Johnson and Jackson Bird both in the frame for the Boxing Day Test, there's a chance Starc could miss out on selection.

But he's desperate to have a bowl at the MCG.

"It's always a big occasion the Boxing Day Test," he said.

"If I get the nod to play for Australia again it's going to be a nice one to run out in front of a big crowd.

"Hopefully I can contribute again if I get the chance in Melbourne."
