David Hussey has backed fellow Victorians Rob Quiney and Clint McKay to replace injured Australia duo Michael Clarke and Ben Hilfenhaus in the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka.

Australia skipper Clarke is in doubt after suffering a hamstring strain in the Hobart Test on Monday, while paceman Hilfenhaus has been ruled out with a side strain.

Hussey said Quiney, who failed to fire in his first two Tests against South Africa last month, deserved another opportunity in Melbourne should Clarke be unavailable.

"He's had limited opportunity in the Test match arena, so if he does get another chance I think Boxing Day would be perfect for him," Hussey said on Tuesday.

"He knows the conditions and ground very well, so he'd be my selection.

"His Test match debut didn't go so well, but being back around the (Melbourne Stars) group he's very, very comfortable and everybody loves him being around."

Australia coach Mickey Arthur has cited Tasmanian seamer Jackson Bird as a possible replacement for Hilfenhaus, but Hussey believes McKay has performed well enough to warrant selection.

"He's been fantastic in the one-day format for Australia and I think he's just getting back to his best," Hussey said.

"He's been fantastic for Victoria for many years now and hopefully he's got a few pennies in the piggybank so the selectors might sway that way."

Hussey threw his support behind all-rounder Shane Watson to captain Australia in the anticipated absence of Clarke.

"Shane's a fantastic leader and player in his own right," Hussey said.

"I think he's the right man for the job. If not, maybe they could pick my brother (Michael Hussey); I think he'd be a good captain too.

"(But) he's 0-4 captaining Australia, so maybe he should be vice-captain and Shane should definitely be captain."
