Shane Watson recalled in 13-man squad for second Test

Shane Watson has been chosen in Australia's 13-man squad for the second Test against South Africa in Adelaide but the star all-rounder faces an uphill battle to make the final cut.

Watson missed the drawn Gabba Test due to a calf injury, and will be put through a series of fitness tests this week before a final call is made on his availability.

National selector John Inverarity said it was unlikely Watson would be able to bowl in the Adelaide Test even if he was passed fit but the 31-year-old remains a chance to be selected as a batsman.

"He'll have to be fit to perform regarding running between the wickets, chasing in the field, diving," Inverarity said after announcing the squad on Friday.

"But it's unlikely that he'll be able to build his workloads so that he'll be able to bowl in the Test.

"We'll make a decision on Tuesday, or Wednesday at the latest (on his availability).

"There's only a small margin in which he's fit to perform as a batsman but not able to bowl. We'll just have to wait and see."

Rob Quiney is in danger of losing his spot if Watson is passed fit.

Australia's selectors opted to retain the entire 12-man squad from Brisbane and recall Watson.

Inverarity confirmed spinner Nathan Lyon would play in the Adelaide Test, which starts next Thursday.

Paceman James Pattinson is another certainty after his impressive display in Brisbane, meaning Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and Gabba 12th man Mitchell Starc will fight it out for the remaining two spots.

Squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Shane Watson (vice-capt), Ed Cowan, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mike Hussey, Nathan Lyon, James Pattinson, Ricky Ponting, Rob Quiney, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade and David Warner.

Paul...I think Con Dom misquoted you in regards to your NT acronym... Judging by your disrespectful, churlish and grudging assessments of our Test players I think NT means...... Nauseous Tosser.

It's a no brainer dump Ponting and blood some good State Cricketers into the Australian tean and if Watson is not fit then dont play him. It's high time Cricket Australia good rid of the "old boy" mentality when it comes to people like Ponting his scores do not warrant him being in any team wearing the green and gold.

What have we another one test wonder. Join the list Quiney. Feel sorry for u at least you had a contribution to the side. More than can be said about Ponting. What a failure. Send him off to CentreLink where he belongs.

It appears that as long as the other players are making runs ie Clarke, Hussey forget the rest Ponting's position is safe. What a #$%$ joke.
