Vince slams 'graceless' Aussies as sore winners

Struggling England batsman James Vince has slammed Australia as 'sore winners' following the home side's 4-0 Ashes win over the tourists.

Australia stormed to an innings victory in the fifth Test at the SCG this week despite England winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Steve Smith and his side lifted the diamond urn trophy in front of a Cricket Australia presentation stage featuring Australia and England hands depicting the 4-0 result.

While the display was criticised as a marketing stunt gone wrong, the players themselves were praised for applauding the Barmy Army following play on day five.

Smith also spoke highly of England captain Joe Root for his courageous display of batting after battling a bad bout of gastro late in the Test match.

But Vince, who will make his Big Bash debut for the Sydney Thunder on Sunday, was unconvinced.

"Well, Australia and English maybe take winning slightly differently," he said.

"I think the public and that try and rub it in a bit more. I think the English are probably slightly more graceful in winning.

"But we knew what to expect when we came here. That's just the way it is out here so it is what it is."

The 26-year-old is in line to be retained by England for the two-Test tour of New Zealand in March.

Vince scored 242 runs at 26.88 in his maiden Ashes series, with his best innings of 83 coming on the first day of the series in Brisbane.

He was caught behind by the wicketkeeper or slips six times.

"While I was out there I felt comfortable and in good nick, but obviously I run myself out in the first game when I could have gone on and got a big hundred," he said.

"It would've given me a bit more confidence as the series went on. Fifty-odd (55) at Perth, (I would have liked) converting those 50s, 60s into 100s, and 20s and 30s into a bit more of a contribution.

"I'll have a look at my game slightly, assess that and move forward to the next series."

Vince is not in England's squad for the five-match ODI series against Australia beginning on Sunday at the MCG.
