Matthew Wade has gone some way to silencing his many haters with a brilliant one-handed catch in the Sheffield Shield.

The under-fire wicketkeeper had to move quickly to his left after Victoria's Seb Gotch got an inside edge to a Sam Rainbird delivery early on day two at the MCG.

WHAT ON EARTH? Is this the weirdest bowling action in world cricket?

Wade stuck out his left hand and plucked an absolute beauty as he was diving to the ground.

The incumbent Test keeper is in a fierce battle to keep his spot for this summer's Ashes series, with NSW gloveman Peter Nevill thought to be favoured by selectors.

But Nevill once again failed to fire with the bat in NSW's clash with Queensland, dismissed for just 17.

Wade was dismissed for just five off 42 balls on Monday, attempting to play a pull shot to a Peter Siddle delivery which pitched on middle-and-off and rocketed into his stumps.

His rash dismissal was the latest in a series of poor batting performances which do not bode well for his Ashes prospects.

National selectors may be unwilling to risk playing a batsman who has averaged just 20 since his Test recall last summer.

The Ashes squad will be named on Friday with Nevill tipped to get the nod ahead of Wade.

Nevill snared four catches on Monday, including an impressive diving effort to dismiss Joe Burns off the bowling of Doug Bollinger.

Western Australia keeper Cameron Bancroft is also making a late case for an Ashes call-up with another classy Shield knock.

Bancroft continued his late charge with an unbeaten 161 against South Australia on Monday, helping take WA to 5-381 at stumps at the WACA.

Bancroft's knock comes off the back of a 76 not out and 86 a week ago against NSW's Test attack.
