Young cricketer killed in bouncer tragedy

Cricket has been rocked by the death of young Pakistani batsman Zubair Ahmed after he was hit on the head by a bouncer.

Reports from Pakistan say Ahmed was hit during a match on August 14 and later died.

He had played four matches for the List A and T20 team Quetta Bears.

The Pakistan Cricket Board broke the news on Twitter, reinforcing the necessity of helmets.

"Tragic death of Zubair Ahmed is another reminder that safety gear i.e. helmet must be worn at all times. Our sympathies with Zubair’s family,” read their tweet.

VERY SCARY: Lehmann opens up about Warner incident

Aussie cricket great Dean Jones, coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistani Champions League, expressed his remorse on Twitter.

"It's so sad to hear.. Young Cricketer Zubair died in Mardan after Cricket ball hit on head during Cricket match. Condolences to his family," Jones said.

The tragic news comes 24 hours after Australian batsman David Warner sent a scare through the national squad when he too was struck by a Josh Hazlewood bouncer.

It served as the latest reminder of the dangers of the sport that were highlighted so tragically by the death of Phillip Hughes, a close friend of Warner, in 2014.

Hughes was struck on the neck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match and died in hospital two days later.
