Aussies robbed of run out by lack of third umpire

The lack of third umpires has cruelled Australia early in the West Indies' innings at the Women's World Cup opener.

Only 10 matches at the tournament in England and Wales will be broadcast live on television, meaning there is no facility for the DRS video review system.

But despite a full compliment of cameras, commentators and graphics, there is no third umpire at all, even for simple run-out decisions.

West Indies batswoman Chidean Nation was well shy of the crease when Alyssa Healy whipped off the bails early in the first innings at Taunton.

Umpire Kathy Cross was in line with the chance but never looked like calling it out.

Australia went up half-heartedly, almost conceding the decision would not go their way without a third umpire.

"It's difficult with the naked eye, but we heard it was close," Australian captain Meg Lanning said.

"The DRS is new to us, and it will only be used in the 10 broadcast games.

"But it's just the way it is and it's the same for every team."

Nation was on just two runs at the time, with the team 1-40 in the 14th over.

The No.3 went on to reach 39 off 73 balls as the West Indies were all out for 204.

Australia chased it down easily as openers Nicole Bolton (107 not out) and Beth Mooney (70) starred.
