Aussies to enter Champions Trophy underdone after washout

Australia will begin their Champions Trophy campaign under a cloud of uncertainty following a washout in Edgbaston on Monday night.

The tourists attempted a warm-up clash with Pakistan but the sides managed just 10.2 overs of action before rain ended the contest.

The unofficial match was played on a wicket to the far left of centre to preserve the midlands ground's main pitches ahead of the tournament.

That meant the square boundary was just 42 metres - and possibly less as Glenn Maxwell, who was on the sidelines with a bruised knee, estimated it was 34 metres - and Aaron Finch took advantage.

The opener scored 36 runs off 36 balls, hitting seven boundaries and five to that short side.

David Warner was at the top with Finch but was caught behind for 11 runs off the bowling of Mohammad Amir.

Steve Smith faced 17 balls for eight runs before the rain arrived.

The abandonment means Australia must select an XI for their Champions Trophy opener against New Zealand on Friday, also at Edgbaston, without each player having had a solid chance to push their case.

The team played a full match against Sri Lanka at The Oval three days ago, with Finch (137), Head (85 not out) the top run-scorers. No other batsman recorded more than 19.

Henriques took three wickets while Hazlewood, Pattinson, Cummins and Head had one apiece.

Left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc, if selected to face the Kiwis, will be playing his first game since breaking down during the tour of India in March.

Fellow bowler John Hastings didn't play against Sri Lanka and missed out on a bowl against Pakistan due to the rain, but he remains confident of earning a cap after playing seven one-day games for Worcestershire since April.

"I had a centre-wicket hit out the other day so as far as game practice and all that sort of stuff and knowing English conditions I am as best prepared as anyone," he said.

"I'm 31 years old now and like to think I've enough experience to know what is needed to get over these next couple of days at training to hit the ground running on Friday.

New Zealand played India in a rain-shortened warm-up match at The Oval on Sunday, with the Black Caps going down by 45 runs (Duckworth-Lewis) after they were all out for 189.

Kane Williamson's men are scheduled to face Sri Lanka at Edgbaston tonight.
