The proof: Mitch Marsh is the worst No.6 in Test history

The statistics seem to prove what many cricket fans already think, Mitchell Marsh has no place on the Australia cricket team.

In fact the stats place Marsh as the worst No.6 batsman in the 140 years of Test cricket.

That’s about as damning as it gets.

But stats don’t lie and with a minimum of 20 Tests played Marsh is a distant last, with 21 innings, 473 runs and an average of 19.70.

The all-rounder’s tour of India has so far been disastrous with scores of 4, 31, 0 and 3. Yep, that’s an average of 9.50.

Well surely he is making up for it with his bowling, you might ask?

But a closer look at the stats again.

The second worst No.6 is South Africa’s JP Duminy, but even he averages 25.91.

And if you take into account Duminy’s compete Test record, regardless of batting position, he averages 34.77 which is a solid, if not spectacular return.

Marsh, on the other hand, still only averages 21.74 in his 21 Tests.

Michael Clarke said in commentary during the second Test against India that he asked Australia captain Steve Smith why he was picked for the tour.

Smith apparently replied that Marsh was the best player of spin in the Australian team.

Well, he seems to have lost his form fairly quickly against the best spinners in the world.

Marsh, who has been nursing a shoulder injury since last summer, will play no further part in the four-Test series after aggravating the niggle.

The 25-year-old was unable to bowl at full pace during the recent match in Bangalore. Marsh will consult specialists in Australia, with his replacement in the 16-man touring party yet to be confirmed.
