Steve Waugh's scary prediction for Aussie pace quartet

Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has made a massive call on the potential of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson.

The 51-year-old former skipper reckons Australia's pace attack can rival the fearsome West Indies sides of the 1980s, if only they were all fully fit at the same time.

"If we can get our four quicks on the park, we could be like the West Indies were in the 80s," he said.

"I think they're that good, but we've never had them all on the park together.

"When we get our quicks together, I wouldn't like to be playing against out attack."

Waugh's comments reflect those of Australian coach Darren Lehmann, who in August said he was dreaming of the day he could get the quartet into the same side.

"I think everyone's dream is to see Cummins, Pattinson, Starc and Hazlewood all in the one side," he said.

"That would be fantastic. It would be like the West Indies of the '80s."

Starc and Hazlewood have been mainstays in the Aussie Test side for the last few years, but Cummins and Pattinson have been plagued by injuries.

Pattinson resumed his first-class career last week in Victoria's Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia after spending 12 months out of the frame after breaking down last February on Australia's tour of New Zealand.

After an incredible debut Test match in 2011, Cummins has only recently returned to international cricket with Australia's T20 and ODI sides.

However he hasn't played a Sheffield Shield match since before his Test debut in 2011.
