'Mum wasn't happy when I got home'

Australia's newest cult hero Mickey Edwards has revealed the hilarious reason his mum wasn't buying into his newfound fame after his fielding cameo at the SCG.

With Australia short on troops on day five against Pakistan, they called on a lanky substitute fieldsman with flowing blonde hair. And the crowd absolutely loved him.

However Edwards has told 7News his mum was less than impressed when he got home.

"She was like 'well where have you been' because I forgot to tell her I was doing it!" he laughed.

Every time he fielded the ball the SCG crowd cheered with delight, with commentators speculating the Aussies had plucked him from the stands.

"Nathan Lyon thought it was pretty funny to throw me the ball as much as he could because the crowd kept cheering whenever I got it", he said.

"They were asking for a wave and I had to ask Peter Handscomb like what do you do? Do you wave back? What's the protocol?"

Edwards returned home to Manly Oval on Sunday where he plays his grade cricket.

"It was pretty scary," the 22-year-old said after the match.

"I actually wasn't expecting that at all. I was trying to palm it off the other bloke who was doing it (12th man duties) but he was like 'you have a go'. It was like a dream come true. You're never going to forget that.

"I'm going to take this all in because I might not get another chance to do it."

Edwards had a hilarious reaction when he first saw himself on the big screen at the SCG.

"'Who is that big idiot with the long, stupid hair?'" he recalled saying to himself.

"I couldn't believe it was me. I've never seen myself on TV. It was really cool. It sort of felt like a normal game but then I was like 'there's actually big crowd here'."

"I actually thought it was going to rain all day so I thought I wasn't going to be doing anything," he said. "I'm happy to get a run around which was a bit of fun. Hopefully (I can) do it again soon. I've nicked the shirt as well. Hope they don't notice."

The Australian side regularly ask young grade cricketers to join them during Test matches on the off chance they might be required to field.
