Australia captain George Bailey has won the toss and elected to bat in Friday's first one-day international against Sri Lanka at the MCG.

Bailey's decision to bat will mean openers Aaron Finch and Phillip Hughes - who are making their 50-over debuts for Australia - will be thrown into the deep end against Sri Lankan speedster Lasith Malinga in the early stages.

Usman Khawaja, who will bat at number 3 for the Aussies, is also making his one-day international debut for his country.

With temperatures approaching 40 degrees, conditions will be difficult for players and a typically flat MCG pitch is predicted.

In team news, Australia have opted for a three-pronged pace attack with left-armers Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson partnered by Victorian seamer Clint McKay, who is playing in front of his home crowd.

Xavier Doherty will shoulder the bulk of the spin-bowling duties but all-rounders Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and David Hussey are also likely to bowl some overs for the hosts.

For Sri Lanka, paceman Nuwan Kulasekara is fit meaning that there is no place in the side for Shaminda Eranga.

The 2011 World Cup finalists are missing star Kumar Sangakkara (finger) but have still selected a strong side, with the likes of skipper Mahela Jayawardene and swashbuckling opener Tillakaratne Dilshan sure to cause the Aussie bowlers problems later in the day.
