The relationship between the two countries has always been fractious and cricket often sparks tension.

Following India's loss, Mohammed Shami - the only Muslim player in the Indian cricket team - was abused online.

Kohli defended his teammate and labelled the social media trolls as "spineless" for their incessant abuse.

"There's a good reason why we are playing on the field and not some bunch of spineless people on social media that have no courage to actually speak to any individual in person," Kohli told reporters.

"We stand by him fully. We are backing him 200 per cent ... Our brotherhood, our friendship within the team - nothing can be shaken."

However, following his defence of Shami, Kohli and Bollywood actor Sharma were trolled online.
