Will Pucovski is out of Victoria's next Sheffield Shield match after suffering a recent concussion

Australian young gun Will Pucovski has been left out of Victoria's Sheffield Shield squad to take on New South Wales as he continues to recover from his latest concussion.

The 22-year-old suffered what is believed to be his eighth concussion in a freak accident while batting for the Cricket Australia XI against the England Lions side on the Gold Coast on February 2.

Pucovski's bat stuck in the Metricon Stadium turf as he was grounding it after a quick single, causing him to fall to the ground.

Wicketkeeper Sam Harper was also left out of Victoria's first Shield squad following the conclusion of the BBL season.

Harper was taken to hospital after suffering a concussion playing for Melbourne Renegades in a BBL clash with Hobart Hurricanes at Marvel Stadium in late January.

"Sam's symptoms fully resolved last week which has allowed him to get back into training, but we're easing him back into a modified program before returning to play," Cricket Victoria's team doctor Trefor James said.

"We're continuing to monitor Will's progress and a phased approach to his return to training.

"As young players who have prior experience with concussion, it's important that they are given as much time as required to fully recover."

Harper was concussed after he collided with Hurricanes bowler Nathan Ellis and fell heavily to the turf.

He was also hospitalised with a significant concussion in Adelaide in 2017 after he was struck on the helmet by Jake Lehmann's bat while keeping up to the stumps in a Shield match at Adelaide Oval.

Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell couldn't be considered as they will travel to South Africa for Australia's ODI and T20 tour later this week, while James Pattinson has been rested ahead of Australia A's game against the England Lions at the MCG.

Jake Fraser-McGurk, Seb Gotch, Travis Dean and spinner Wil Parker, a potential debutant, have been included in the squad.

The winless Vics are bottom of the Shield table heading into the clash against NSW that starts on Friday at the SCG.
