Scottish tears as Murdoch wins surprise gold

Scotland has a new national hero in the form of swimmer Ross Murdoch. Murdoch, 20, did everything to win the hearts of the Scottish public with a fantastic performance to win the 200m breatstroke gold medal on home soil.

Even better than the win was the youngsters priceless reaction to victory.

He beat out heavy favourite and compatriot Michael Jamieson and broke the Commonwealth Games record, clocking a time of 2.07:30.

'There's no way that just happened. I can't believe it. That was amazing. It's a dream come true, Murdoch said.

'It was a massive personal best for me. I didn't think I could do that if I'm honest. I'm so surprised. I can't believe it's just happened.'

Jamieson was billed as the poster-boy for the Scotland at the Games but it was the Murdoch, much to his disbelief that set the pool alight.

Aussie Christian Sprenger flew out of the blocks from lane eight to take an early lead, only to be clawed back by the two Scotsmen. He eventually finished outside of the medals.
