Nathan Lyon would welcome a Shane Warne comeback

Shane Warne's flirtation with a Test comeback has been welcomed by Australia's current Test spinner, even though it would probably cost him a spot in the team.

Nathan Lyon watched on as Warne last week declared he could still be a force in Test cricket despite his 43 years.

Lyon has been a more than serviceable spinner for Australia for almost 18 months, but the thought of Warne returning has garnered plenty of support from fans yearning for the glory days of Australian cricket.

And Lyon himself says he would love to see Warne back in the Test arena.

"He's a legend of Australian cricket. If he wanted to come back and play Test match cricket it'd be fantastic for Australia but I'm happy where I'm standing at the moment," Lyon told Fairfax.

"The Shane Warne stuff is out of my control, it's up to the selectors.

"I've got no doubt he's a world-class bowler. (We're) totally different bowlers. He's the best in the world."

Warne first flagged the potential of a return last week, saying watching Australia lose the third Test in Perth made him want "to jump off the couch and grab the ball".

He later hosed down the hysteria, saying he would only make a comeback if captain Michael Clarke asked him to come out of retirement.

But he maintains he could still be a force at the highest level, despite an embarrassing performance in the opening match of the Big Bash League on Friday night.

"At the moment while you're still doing it, and still bowling really well, which I am, then I suppose anything is possible," he said on Sunday.

For his part, Lyon’s goal remains simple.

"To be the best cricketer I can be and hopefully contribute to a lot of Australian victories.

"I'm proud of my achievements but personally I know I've still got a long way to go to get to where I want to get to and where the Australian team wants to get to."
