Smith clears the air over Kangaroos song

Kangaroos captain Cameron Smith has reportedly cleared the air with teammate and NSW captain Paul Gallen over the controversial victory chant sung after Australia’s win over New Zealand two weeks ago.

NSW players in the Australian squad were reportedly left fuming when Smith and his fellow Queenslanders sang the Maroons victory song after Australia’s eight-point win over the Kiwis in Townsville.

The saga led to calls for the Queenslanders to apologise, with even cricket legend Steve Waugh and former Wallaby Simon Poidevin joining the debate.

A spokesman for the Australian Rugby League Commission said Smith had moved quickly to quell any ill-feeling from the NSW members of the Kangaroos squad.

"Cameron Smith has spoken to Paul Gallen about it ... he says there is no issue at all," said Andrew Hill, the ARLC's director of league integration and development.

There have been reports the Blues members of the squad were so incensed with the song that they sat at a separate table to their Queensland counterparts the day after the game.

But Hill said any talk of a divide in the camp was off the mark.

"I have spoken to the coach (Tim Sheens), the captain and the vice- captain about it and all of them have confirmed it's a non-issue for the team," Hill said.
