Cavaliers to interview Chauncey Billups for top basketball executive role

Chauncey Billups is at the top Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert’s list of candidates to fill the team’s lead basketball executive role vacated by the departure of GM David Griffin, The Vertical reports.

Billups is interested in the front-office gig and is expected to meet with Gilbert Tuesday, per ESPN.

According to The Vertical, Billups’ title would be president of basketball operations, and he would hire a GM with “day-to-day front office experience that he doesn’t have on his résumé.”

Billups’ relationship with Gilbert dates back over 10 years, as Billups endorsed Gilbert’s Detroit-based mortgage company, Rock Financial, when he played for the Pistons, ESPN notes. Billups is also close with Cavs coach Tyronn Lue.

While Billups – currently an NBA analyst on ESPN – has no front-office experience, multiple NBA teams see potential for him in an executive role. The Hawks, for example, recently interviewed him for their GM job.
