Carpenter's Lyon stay perfect in Champions League

Lyon, Chelsea and Roma have all stayed perfect in the Women's Champions League by cruising to away victories across Europe.

Roma routed Galatasaray 6-1 in Istanbul, Chelsea beat FC Twente 3-1 in the Netherlands and eight-time champions Lyon, featuring Matildas right-back Ellie Carpenter, won 2-0 at Wolfsburg.

Elsewhere on Thursday night, Real Madrid claimed their first victory of the campaign by easing past Celtic 4-0 in the Spanish capital.

Roma and Lyon both have six points in Group A. Two-time champions Wolfsburg and Galatasaray, the first Turkish team to reach the group stage, have no points.

Chelsea lead Group B with six points, with Madrid and Twente on three and last-placed Celtic on zero.

In Germany, Wolfsburg striker Alexandra Popp made her 100th competition appearance — becoming only the second player to reach the mark but it was Lyon defender Wendie Renard, the only one who has played more, who stole the show.

Renard's header found the back of the net early on in her 118th game in the competition.

US international Lindsey Horan netted from the penalty spot in the second half.

Lyon, runner-ups last season to Barcelona, are the competition's record eight-time champions but last won the trophy in 2022.

In Enschede, Chelsea struck early in another winning performance under new coach Sonia Bompastor, who joined from Lyon.

Agnes Beever-Jones put the Blues, still missing injured Australia captain Sam Kerr through injury, ahead with a deflected long-distance strike in the seventh minute and Japan's Maika Hamano made it 2-0 a short time later from outside the area.

Substitute Guro Reiten added the third from the spot just past the hour mark.

Roma were dominant in a matchup between the Italian and Turkish champions.

Hawa Cissoko scored in the seventh minute, Valentina Giacinti made it 2-0 in the 24th and, after Manuela Giugliano missed a first-half stoppage time penalty, Emilie Haavi got Roma's third early in the second half.

Giugliano got the fourth from close range before Andrea Staskova scored the hosts' consolation goal. Roma substitutes Marta Pandini and Alice Corelli also netted.

In Madrid, Caroline Weir fired home a long-range left-footer in the seventh minute against Celtic.

Signe Bruun headed in the second on 72 minutes, followed by Caroline Moller's lob of goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty and Linda Caicedo's converted penalty.
