Brooks Koepka locks keys in his car, shows up late to PGA Championship practice round

We’ve all been there.

Brooks Koepka was a bit late for his news conference at Southern Hills Country Club on Tuesday morning ahead of the PGA Championship — which will mark his first tournament back since The Masters last month.

But after he had loaded up his car with his clubs and everything else he needed for the day, Koepka realized his mistake. The keys were sitting inside the running car, and the doors had locked.

Whoops.

Koepka eventually made it to the Tulsa, Oklahoma, course about an hour late — and was quick to push the blame over to his putting coach while not realizing that, even with newer cars, locking the keys inside was still possible.

"I watched him unlock the car, start the car, then he grabbed the bag, put it in the trunk, shut the trunk, and I went in and grabbed a hat, walked right out, and then the car was locked," Koepka said, via ESPN’s Jeremy Willis. "I don't know how the keys locked inside the car. It boggles me. I didn't think a car was supposed to do that, but apparently it does."

There was no other way for them to get to the course, either. He needed his clubs for the day, which were locked inside the car, so calling for a car was out of the question.

"Only me, man. It's like a theme of car troubles. Run out of gas and then this," Koepka said, via ESPN. "I'm just glad it didn't happen on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.”

At least he got it out of the way early.

Koepka is back competing this week for the first time since he missed the cut at Augusta National more than a month ago. The eight-time Tour winner has a pair of top-5 finishes already this season, at both the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play and the WM Phoenix Open, though he hasn’t won since the 2021 stop in Phoenix. He was set to play at the AT&T Byron Nelson last week, but he pulled out.

Koepka is currently listed at +4,000 on BetMGM to win the PGA Championship — well behind favorites Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler. A win this week would be Koepka’s third at the major in four seasons, and his fifth major win in total.
