Braves lose Mike Soroka for season after he re-tore his Achilles walking around clubhouse

One of the Atlanta Braves' best young pitchers won't pitch this season after an unexpected and unfortunate injury. Mike Soroka re-tore his Achilles tendon while walking around the clubhouse, the team announced Saturday.

Soroka, 23, was recovering after initially tearing his Achilles during a start last August. Soroka had surgery to repair the issue and was expected back in April. Soroka experienced multiple setbacks during rehab, however, and has not pitched for the Braves this season.

He was still on the road to recovery when he felt a pop in his Achilles while walking through the team's clubhouse Thursday.

The team performed an MRI, which revealed Soroka completely re-tore his Achilles. He's scheduled to undergo another surgery to repair the issue in late June.

The Braves haven't lived up to expectations this season. The team is just 36-39, and sits in third place in the NL East. Many projected the team to win the division in 2021.

While that's still possible, losing Soroka hurts. Soroka made the All-Star team as a 21-year-old after posting a 2.68 ERA over 174 2/3 innings in 2019.

Big things have been expected from Soroka since then, but he hasn't had a chance to build off that season. Soroka pitched just 13 2/3 innings in 2020 before tearing his Achilles. He was supposed to get his promising career back on track in 2021, but that's on hold after Soroka's latest setback.
