'Boxing is so rigged': Controversy erupts over Canelo-GGG decision

Their first bout ended in a controversial draw that neither fighter was happy with – and now fans are furious after Canelo Alvarez handed Gennady Golovkin his first defeat and took his world middleweight championships.

Their rematch in Las Vegas went the distance and Alvarez, who had the fight delayed when he was suspended after failing a drug test in May, came out on top in a majority decision.

Two judges favoured Alvarez 115-113, while a third had it 114-114.

The two fighters switched roles, with Golovkin trying to counter Alvarez and the Mexican fighter coming forward much of the fight.

Both landed well to the head and Golovkin controlled some rounds with his jab though neither were ever in any trouble of going down.

Golovkin threw and landed more, according to CompuBox, but Alvarez landed at a significantly higher percentage – Alvarez was 202 of 622, while Golovkin was 234 of 879.

“He’s a great fighter but I’m a great fighter and I showed it tonight,” Alvarez said.

Golovkin left the ring without giving an interview, hinting at immediate frustration with the decision.

“I’m not going to say who won tonight, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges,” he later told reporters.

“I thought it was a very good fight for the fans, and very exciting. I thought I fought better than he did.”

Golovkin might be 36 years old but he bounced back after an early beating to convince enough viewers he had won the fight.

Alvarez is already open to a rematch.

“If the people want another fight, we’ll do it again … we’ll do it again, no doubt,” he said.

Golovkin added: “Under the right conditions, yes.”

If the swift reaction to the decision is any indication, the people definitely want another fight:
