Jordyn Wieber, Gabrielle Douglas tied after tight first day at Visa Championships

ST. LOUIS -- The all-around competition at the Visa Championships in St. Louis saw four different leaders over the course of the evening, then ended the first day of women's competition with a tie for the lead. Gabrielle Douglas and reigning world all-around champion Jordyn Wieber are in first place with a score of 60.65, and are trailed by world team member Aly Raisman and newcomer Kyla Ross.

Drama reigned until the last routine. Douglas finished the day with a 15.05 on vault, which is usually her weakest event. Wieber needed better than a 15.25 to beat her on the floor exercise.

She delivered with a difficulty-packed routine that was executed perfectly. The judges awarded her a 15.25, meaning she and Douglas were both in the lead.

The close scores didn't surprise Wieber.

"We've been looking strong all year. We all want each other to do well, but we all want to be on top of the scoreboard. We all have motivation to be No. 1," Wieber said.

Douglas said she is pleased about the result, but still has plenty of work in front of her.

"[Being in the lead] does excite me, but there's still a second day of competition, so I can't be too cocky. I just stay relaxed. So I have to focus on sleeping tonight, training tomorrow and competing after that."

Raisman had the top floor routine of the evening, and is just 0.45 behind Wieber and Douglas. She wasn't surprised to see the competition so close.

"I knew that all these girls were so amazing, and I looked at the scoreboard and it was so tight. The top eight spots are so close to each other, and I feel like we're all really even. We're all doing really well, but it's really intimidating but at the same time, it's great for Team USA. I'm so proud of everyone tonight. "
