Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace says the January transfer window is an opportunity to show the club eventually has the potential to win promotion to the Premier League.

Eustace's side beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Hillsborough on Tuesday - their fifth consecutive win in the Championship.

That moved them to fifth in the league with a game in hand on teams around them, putting them into the promotion picture just prior to the halfway stage of the season.

"It's important we improve and invest in the right areas. It's evident where we need to do that," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"If we're in a strong position come January then why not? The league is wide open and we've got to keep building and believing in what we're doing.

"I'm not saying about being promoted but I'm saying about building and bringing good quality into the group.

"It's important that we want success and that isn't given, you have to earn it. It might not be this season but we're certainly headed in the right direction so it's important we keep building with quality."

Blackburn's form is in stark contrast to last season, when the club struggled for form in the Championship and Eustace arrived as replacement for Jon Dahl Tomasson following a run of eight Championship games without victory.

The former Birmingham City boss then kept the club in the division having navigated them to a 19th-place finish, three points clear of the drop zone.

Some canny signings in the summer, including former Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell and forwards Yuki Ohashi and Makhtar Gueye has transformed their fortunes this term and put them in the frame for a return to the top flight for the first time since their relegation in 2012.

"I know this group is committed and will run through a brick wall for each other. That was proven last season," Eustace added.

"The way we did that and the way we've added to the group now, we've added more characters and good honest people.

"The group are believing in ourselves more from the football. We're a really good footballing team. The goals have proven that since the start of the season."
