Biraghi scores from his own half in Fiorentina win

Fullback Cristiano Biraghi has scored from his own half with a quick free kick that caught Hellas Verona goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo off guard during the final minutes of a 3-0 win for Fiorentina in Serie A.

With teammate Rolando Mandragora still down on the grass after being fouled - and with a Verona player trying to help him up - Biraghi stepped up and unleashed a missile of a shot that flew in over the frantically backtracking Montipo.

Measured at 57.91 metres, no one in Serie A had scored from a longer distance since 2013 when Facundo Roncaglia scored from 61.48m - also for Fiorentina - against Napoli.

Antonin Barak and Arthur Cabral had put Fiorentina ahead before halftime as the Tuscan club carried on their momentum after qualifying for the Europa Conference League round of 16.

The three points took Fiorentina up to 12th, while Verona remained 18th and in the relegation zone.

In Monday's late game, Lazio leapfrogged city rivals Roma in the race for the final Champions League spot, moving fourth courtesy of a 1-0 win over struggling Sampdoria.

Lazio midfielder Luis Alberto scored the game's only goal in the 80th minute with a strike from the edge of the area.
