Bills QB Josh Allen 'day-to-day' with elbow injury, HC Sean McDermott unsure if he'll play vs. Vikings

The Buffalo Bills may have to face the formidable Minnesota Vikings without their franchise quarterback Josh Allen.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott addressed the elbow injury of Allen's throwing arm during a news conference on Wednesday, and said that he's currently "day-to-day." As for playing against the Vikings on Sunday, all McDermott would say was "we'll see." He also assured the media and fans that they would be using "common sense" about whether Allen will take the field.

Allen won't practice on Wednesday, McDermott said. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that Allen has told his teammates that he'll be good to play on Sunday, but that obviously remains to be seen.

Allen hurt his elbow during the Bills' shocking Week 9 loss to the New York Jets. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Allen has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), an injury most people relate to pitchers in baseball rather than quarterbacks. But just like pitchers, quarterbacks do a lot of throwing. Allen has also had this particular injury before. He missed four games in his rookie season (2018) with a UCL sprain.

If Allen isn't able to play on Sunday, McDermott said that backup Case Keenum will play instead.

When asked if he and the coaching staff would change their offensive game plan to something more run focused, McDermott would only say "everything in balance, everything in moderation." NFL coaches are famous for finding the weirdest and least understandable ways to answer (or avoid answering) questions, but since Keenum doesn't have nearly the arm cannon Allen has, that impenetrable answer probably translates to "yes."
