Sevilla have moved up to third in La Liga with a 1-0 win at Real Valladolid.
Ever Banega's retaken penalty on 13 minutes was enough for Sevilla, who ended the game man down after Lucas Ocampos wsa sent off in the final stages for a second yellow card.
Julen Lopetegui's side's narrow victory took them to 27 points from 14 games, within one point of leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid, who have played one game less after their Clasico was postponed last month.
Sevilla were awarded a spot kick after Nolito was caught late in the area.
Jordi Masip kept out Banega's effort but the Argentine was allowed to retake it after a VAR review showed the goalkeeper was off his line before the shot was taken.
Banega made no mistake with his second attempt, stroking the ball into the top right corner to break the deadlock.
"It was a very difficult game at a hard place to play but it was a great win," Banega said.
Athletic Bilbao went fifth with a 2-1 victory at Osauna.
Inaki Williams sent Athletic ahead but Chimy Avila equalised for the hosts in the 76th minute.
However, Kenan Kodro struck just three minutes later, slamming home from 10 yards out after capitalising on a loose ball in the Osasuna area.
Athletic's win ended Osasuna's impressive 31-game streak without a home defeat in the league.
"We were solid, we knew how to suffer and we deserved the victory," Athletic coach Gaizka Garitano said.
Celta Vigo earned an important 3-1 win at Villarreal, with talisman Iago Aspas striking twice for the Galicians.
Pione Sisto sent Celta ahead in the 54th minute but Samuel Chukwueze quickly levelled.
Two goals from Aspas in the final stages earned 18th-placed Celta a win that has them two points away from safety.
Second-bottom Espanyol stayed in the relegation zone after a 1-1 draw against Getafe.
Alaves won on the road for the first time this season, triumphing 2-0 at Eibar.
The visitors needed two late goals from Joselu to climb to 13th.
The defeat left Eibar, who had been the superior side, 16th and only three points clear of the bottom three.
