The PGA heads to Maryland this week for the usual event in an unusual location. The Wells Fargo Championship is typically played in North Carolina, but since Quail Hollow Golf Club will be hosting the 2022 Presidents Cup, TPC Potomac will host this week’s tournament instead.

For this event, I’ll be looking to the ball strikers, those who can be accurate off the tee and with their long irons as TPC Potomac has a bit of a penal layout with narrow 30-yard wide fairways, three-inch thick rough, small greens, and plenty of water hazards.

Here’s what I like this week in the head-to-head market.

Gary Woodland +105 against Tyrell Hatton

It all starts with the tee shot. Players can definitely get into some trouble if they miss their first shot. Hatton has not had back-to-back positive ball-striking rounds since last May/June. The Englishman has lost strokes ball striking in seven of his last nine recorded events.

Looking at the last 24 rounds, Woodland has been the stronger off the tee and approach player. Woodland has gained strokes ball striking in seven of his last 10 events played, resulting in more greens in regulation hit compared to Hatton.

With Hatton struggling with his ball striking, he’s now currently ranked 146th on tour in bogey avoidance compared to Woodland at 51st.

With this course showcasing a troublesome layout, I’ll fade the player struggling off the tee.
