I didn’t realize I was a candle collector until a few years ago. I was moving to a new apartment, and I told one of the movers to be careful with a heavy box because it was all candles. “This is just candles?” he said, looking at me in horror. So yeah, I guess I like candles.
Over the years, I’ve definitely found that my favorite scents are either light and fresh or warm and musky. Florals aren’t really my thing — but Boy Smells’ new Secrete Garden Collection may have changed that. I’m obsessed with the Hackney Garden candle and have burned it almost every day since I got it. It is hands down this year’s best spring candle scent.
The Secrete Garden Collection is a trio of candles with notes of foliage, fruit and florals — basically, all the smells you’d find in your backyard (aka your secret garden) come springtime.
Of course, as I said, my favorite is Hackney Garden. It’s a fresh, herbal scent “inspired by East London’s artistic Hackney neighborhood,” according to the product description. It has notes of neroli, ivy, patchouli and vetiver. Boy Smells also writes that the scent includes “Phytogaia technology, molecules emitted by forest trees proven induce the calming effect of nature.”
The other two scents in the trio are Damasque and Rosalita. Damasque is a re-release, and it features notes of stone fruit with Damascan rose for a more romantic effect. It can also make your bathroom smell like a fresh spa.
Rosalita is a re-release from the brand’s previous Pride collection and contains notes of Spanish cassis, saffron and leather with a mix of Turkish rose petals, amber and cedarwood. It’s both floral and woody.
Yes, these are all floral scents, which isn’t exactly a radical idea for spring. However, the brand somehow makes its florals smell edgier and even a bit sexy. Additionally, each candle in the Secrete Garden Collection strays from Boy Smells’ signature black-jar-pink-label style and opts instead for a single bright color. (Take a look at the photo below! They’re all very pretty.)
The new collection launched at the end of March, and you can purchase each candle on its own for $44 or a votive set of all three for $66 on Boy Smells’ website and at select luxury retailers, like Standard Dose.
Yes, there are hundreds, probably thousands, of scented candles out there. But if you’re going to get one for spring, make it Boy Smells’ Hackney Garden. It will instantly brighten and refresh your space to make it feel like you just deep cleaned every corner, filled it with fresh flowers from the farmers’ market and opened the windows on the season’s sunniest day.
