However, a few months after giving birth, most moms begin to experience hair shedding and thinning hair, commonly known as postpartum hair loss.
The good news is that hair loss under these circumstances is completely normal. To learn more about what causes it and what you can do to thicken your hair at home, In The Know’s Jamé Jackson spoke with Dr. Yates, a board-certified hair loss expert and dermatologist.
Why do women experience postpartum hair loss?
Once you get pregnant, you start stimulating these hormones that are female hormones called estrogen and progesterone. And throughout the pregnancy, these hormones get higher and higher and higher. They actually protect your hair from shedding.
But after you deliver [the baby], these hormones drop down to normal levels. Now, your hair is not exposed to that high estrogen. And it starts to act like it normally would — it starts to shed again. But to you, it seems like ‘oh my god, I’m losing all my hair.’
What really has happened is all that hair you would have shed if you weren’t pregnant. It’s all kind of happening at once.
What ingredients should you look for in your hair care products to combat hair loss?
You want sulfate-free [shampoos] because, especially if you’re talking about ethnic hair, our hair doesn’t have the same oil structure that non-ethnic hair does. You want to use a volumizing shampoo, a volumizing conditioner and you want to use something that adds some oil to your hair.
What’s the best oil for postpartum hair loss?
I found that argan oil seems to work extremely well [for most people] because it doesn’t have an odor and it’s not very heavy.
