Bathurst finale excites Supercars champ

Scott McLaughlin can't wait to get back on the track after the sport's shutdown

Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin is tipping a fast and furious season finale at Mount Panorama in February.

Organisers revealed the revised calendar for the championship on Sunday, with a second event at Bathurst to wrap up the title from February 5 to 7.

McLaughlin is tipping the event will be a sprint event with a pair of 250km races across the weekend on the iconic 6.2km circuit.

"It's something that's going to be so different," McLaughlin told RSN.

"Never gone to Bathurst thinking sprint round and where we can make passes where sometimes you normally can't.

"It's going to be really cool to be able to battle there and be very aggressive at a track that you've already got to be aggressive in itself to drive.

"That's going to be such a different feeling to what we're normally used to."

The coronavirus pandemic led to the championship being suspended in March after the Melbourne Grand Prix was cancelled.

The revised calendar features 11 remaining events with the Gold Coast and Newcastle street races scrapped.

Having spent most of the shutdown competing in online races for Supercars and IndyCar, McLaughlin admits he's itching to get back to the real thing.

"The first two to three weeks it was nice to have a bit of a break away from everything but ... where we're at now and it's just like, far out, I just want to go back," the DJR Team Penske star said.

"It was such a good feeling when they said we're going back racing. To have a date, not being left in the unknown and stuff like that. That was really cool."

The series will resume at Sydney Motorsport Park on June 27 and McLaughlin knows he and the field will have to shake off the cobwebs quickly with no testing dates or track time before the resumption.

"Just jump in and see what you've got," he said.

"It's going to be tough for everyone.

"It's going to be different but really excited for the challenge of something different. I think we're going to have a lot of fun."
