Ben Simmons shows off hops in Melbourne social comp

In town to host a camp for kids, Philadelphia 76ers rookie Ben Simmons has dominated a local basketball competition in Greensborough.

The 21-year-old, who grew up in Melbourne, was captured taking part in a Monday night social league with a friend.

Simmons was drafted by the Sixers with the No.1 pick in the 2016 draft but sat out the entire 2016-17 season after suffering a broken foot last September.

But back at full fitness and preparing for his debut in October, Simmons showed off his athleticism in the Splashers' 72-52 win over the Redbacks at the Diamond Valley Sports Centre.

Simmons finished the game with 34 points from 16 two-point field goals and two free throws.

The Splashes trailed by 12 points when he first scored 90 seconds into the second quarter, with Simmons putting his side ahead for good on the half-time buzzer.

While his appearance was a surprise, it is normal for NBA players to play organised basketball in the off-season.

The Drew League is a popular competition that takes place annually in Los Angeles, while other pro-am games take place all over the United States.

Simmons will host his first camp in Balwyn North on Sunday.
