Aussie Michelle Timms inducted into FIBA Hall of Fame

Australian basketball trailblazer Michelle Timms has been inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Switzerland.

The three-time Olympian and two-time medallist is just the fifth Australian and the first female Australian player to be granted the honour.

Timms was inducted alongside NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon and former long-time NBA commissioner David Stern.

An undoubted superstar in Australia in the WNBL, Timms won four championships and played in 285 games, but it was the international stage where shone shone the brightest.

Timms led the Opals to their first ever Olympic medal, a bronze in Atlanta in 1996 and then went one better, winning silver in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics.

She found success wherever she played, but it was her pioneering spirit which opened the door for many other Aussies to follow.

She was the first Australian woman to play professionally overseas and the first Aussie to make it in America in the WNBA, signing with the Phoenix Mercury in the league's inaugural season in 1997.
