Barry Sanders says he's tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated

Barry Sanders revealed Friday that he has tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated, wearing a mask and taking all the precautions he says he could.

The Detroit Lions legend said in a tweet that he's asymptomatic, but will be isolating until doctors give him the go-ahead. He says will still be available for the Lions' opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 12, in which he figures to to serve his usual duties as a team ambassador.

Sanders is among a handful of athletes and other sports figures to test positive despite being fully vaccinated, with some including Frank Reich, Jeremy Lin, Don Mattingly and Christian Yelich. Getting the vaccine significantly decreases your chances of contracting COVID-19 and severely decreases the risk of serious symptoms, but it is not a perfect shield against the virus.

By the Detroit Free Press' count, all Lions coaches and more than 90 percent of the team's players have been vaccinated against COVID-19, but three players — offensive lineman Evan Heim, linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin and defensive tackle Nick Williams — have still been placed on the COVID-19/reserve list this summer.
