Ballon d’Or 2024 LIVE! Results and reaction as Rodri wins and Real Madrid boycott after Vinicius Jr snub

Ballon d’Or 2024 LIVE!

Real Madrid stars continue to slam the decision to overlook Vinicius Jr for this year’s Ballon d’Or award. The Brazil forward had been widely expected to win the biggest individual prize in football for 2024 but shock news emerged early on Monday claiming that Manchester City star Rodri would claim it instead, which he duly did.

Such was the level of anger in the Spanish capital, Los Blancos boycotted the ceremony entirely despite winning a host of other awards on the night. Carlo Ancelotti was named as the best coach of the year, while Jude Bellingham finished third in the men’s Ballon d’Or rankings ahead of Dani Carvajal, with the now retired Toni Kroos also in the top 10. A host of their big players have been making their feelings crystal clear on social media, too.

Aitana Bonmati won the Ballon d'Or Feminin for the second year in a row on a successful night for Barcelona, after Lamine Yamal won the Kopa Trophy, given to the best men’s under-21 player. Harry Kane shared the Gerd Muller Trophy with Kylian Mbappe after the pair both scored 52 goals. Emi Martinez once again picked up the Yashin Award for best goalkeeper, while the coaches awards went to Ancelotti and Emma Hayes. Real Madrid won the men’s club of the year award, but had nobody there to accept it. Follow all the latest reaction to a dramatic Ballon d’Or ceremony live below!

Despite all the controversy, it’s worth remembering that Rodri has indeed been one of the leading players in the world.

He was certainly enjoying himself on Monday night!

Why Vinicius did NOT win the Ballon d'Or

10:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

The editor-in-chief of France Football magazine Vincent Garcia has suggested Vinicius Junior may have missed out on the Ballon d’OR because both Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal also finished in the top five.

"It was a close victory, it wasn't decided by much," Garcia told L'Equipe., external

"Obviously, Vinicius probably suffered from the presence of Bellingham and Carvajal in the top five because, mathematically, it took away a few points.

"It also sums up Real's season, which was carried by three or four players, and the judges shared their choices between them, which benefitted Rodri."

Hayes recognised after stellar year

04:30 , Matt Verri

Emma Hayes picked up the award for the best women’s coach.

After winning a fifth Women’s Super League title on the bounce with Chelsea, Hayes then led the United States women’s team to Olympic gold in Paris over the summer.

"I just want to say I'm very honoured to be awarded the first Ballon d'Or for a coach in the women's game," Hayes said via a video message.

"I understand how challenging our work is. I feel a little embarrassed because we're in a team game.

“I've been so honoured to coach such incredible people at Chelsea and the United States. This is a very proud day."

Bellingham matches Lampard and Gerrard

03:00 , Matt Verri

It’s been slightly lost in the drama of Real Madrid boycotting the ceremony, but it was still a fairly significant night for Jude Bellingham.

He finished third in the Ballon d’Or, behind only Rodri and Vinicius Junior.

Bellingham is the first Englishman to finish in the top three of the voting since Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in 2005.

Real Madrid hit out at lack of 'respect'

00:30 , Matt Verri

Real Madrid won the men’s club of the year, while Carlo Ancelotti picked up the award for the best coach.

There was nobody there to accept either of those prizes though, with the club boycotting the ceremony due to Vinicius Junior not winning the Ballon d’Or.

In a statement to AFP, Madrid said: "If the award criteria doesn't give it to Vinicius as the winner, then those same criteria should point to Carvajal as the winner.

"As this was not the case, it is clear that Ballon d'Or-Uefa does not respect Real Madrid. And Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected."

Speaking after he accepted his award, Rodri revealed his satisfaction at winning the Ballon d’Or as a midfielder.

He said: "Today many friends have written to me and have told me that football has won, for giving visibility to so many midfielders who have a job in the shadows and today it is coming to light.

"I'm a regular guy with values, who studies, who tries to do things right and doesn't try to follow the stereotypes, and even so I have been able to get to the top and it is thanks to all of you."

More reaction from Rodri

Monday 28 October 2024 21:59 , Matt Verri

On beating Vinicius and Bellingham: “They have all the future in their hands. I’m so proud to be elected as the best in front of these guys.

“I just want to say thank you to the people that recognised my value in the game. I’m very happy for me and my family.”

Monday 28 October 2024 21:56 , Matt Verri

Rodri says his focus in the last few years has been to contribute more in the final third, to become a more complete midfielder.

Says it’s almost like being a striker at times, with how much Man City spend in the other team’s half.

Monday 28 October 2024 21:52 , Matt Verri

“This is a victory not just for me, but for Spanish football.”

He then tells Lamine Yamal that he expects the winger to win this award soon.

The 17-year-old has so far tonight been told he could emulate Lionel Messi, has three years to break the Ballon d’Or record, and now this from Rodri.

Just as well he seems pretty confident. And good at football.

The winning moment!

Monday 28 October 2024 21:49 , Matt Verri

Rodri still in the very early days of his recovery from an ACL injury, but this will help lift his mood!

And there is the confirmation!

The first Premier League player to win the Ballon d’Or since 2008.

Whoever is operating the camera is panning to Rodri every 30 seconds.

Guess they are slightly limited for choice when Dani Carvajal, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior are all in a different country.

Weah, meanwhile, is revealing how much he admires Harry Kane.

Says he loves Tottenham, despite never playing for them. Not sure how we got onto this.

Monday 28 October 2024 21:38 , Matt Verri

George Weah, who won the Ballon d’Or in 1995, is on the stage. He’ll be giving it out.

Feels like they should be giving Rodri some notice. If he starts now, he should be able to get the crutches ready and up on the stage in time.

Not long now!

Monday 28 October 2024 21:36 , Matt Verri

Bit of a break while we wait for the Ballon d’Or to be awarded.

Don’t worry. I know exactly what you want...

Barcelona dominate!

Monday 28 October 2024 21:27 , Matt Verri

It’s a one-two-three for Barcelona.

Bonmati wins the Ballon d’Or Feminin, with Caroline Graham Hansen second in the voting and Salma Paralluelo in third.

Right then - one award to go, and it’s the Ballon d’Or.

Time to find out whether Real Madrid have made an almighty mistake or not...

Monday 28 October 2024 21:25 , Matt Verri

“Who is Aitana Bonmati off the pitch? Who are you?”

“I am a humble person. I am the same person as 15 years ago, with my feet on the ground, with my team in my village.”

And now Natalie Portman is asked if she has a few words for Bonmati. Tremendous.

Her answer is to urge people to buy tickets and watch women’s football.

Monday 28 October 2024 21:24 , Matt Verri

Slightly leading question, as Bonmati is asked how important the Ballon d’Or has been in improving her confidence on the pitch.

Not really, is the answer. Says the quality of her team-mates is what gives her confidence. Fair enough.

Monday 28 October 2024 21:21 , Matt Verri

Bit of French, few sentences of England and, unsurprisingly, a fair bit of Spain. Bonmati showing off in her acceptance speech.

Two wins for Alexia Putellas, two for Bonmati... Barcelona continue to dominate this award.

Aitana Bonmati wins the Ballon d'Or Feminin!

Monday 28 October 2024 21:16 , Matt Verri

The Barcelona star wins the biggest award in the women’s game for the second year in a row.

Was initially suggested that she might not be here tonight, due to being on Spain duty, but Bonmati was never going to miss this.

Monday 28 October 2024 21:14

Natalie Portman is now on stage, and she is seemingly being interrogated over how much she actually likes football. Still in the balance.

And now a bit of a French lesson as she talks us through her favourite words. Riveting stuff.

Carlo Ancelotti wins Men's Coach of the Year!

Monday 28 October 2024 21:11 , Matt Verri

"First of all, thank you all very much. It's an honour to be back. I'd like to thank my colleagues, my teammates at Aston Villa. They all know how demanding I am.

"I come from a very humble place and this is something that makes me want to do better and improve. It is the group effort that makes things happen."

Unsurprisingly, Rodri is asked about the rumours that he will win the Ballon d’Or tonight.

Toni Kroos is on the Ballon d’Or shortlist tonight.

His ranking has not yet been revealed, but he’s guaranteed to be in the top ten.

However, fair to say the award is not something that gets Kroos particularly excited.

“Rodri will win the Ballon d’Or,” he said.

“I’ve never seen the importance of these individual awards in football, they have no place.”

Mats Hummels has been speaking on the red carpet and saying all the right things...

Foden just outside top ten

Monday 28 October 2024 18:08 , Matt Verri

Phil Foden is ranked 11th, after playing his part in Man City winning the Premier League and England reaching the Euro 2024 final.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is just behind in 12th.

Fairly safe bet to predict that those two will be among those competing for the Ballon d’Or in the years ahead.

The famous faces are starting to arrive on the red carpet in Paris.

Djibril Cisse among the first up, and he’s wearing... a lot of material.

Ancelotti had backed Vinicius

Monday 28 October 2024 17:48 , Matt Verri

Carlo Ancelotti has been convinced that Vinicius Junior will win the Ballon d’Or.

The Brazilian scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid came from two goals down to beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week, and Ancelotti was asked about Vinicius’ hopes of winning the award after the match.

“What I can say is that it’s rare to see a player who plays a second half like Vinicius did. And not because of the three goals but because of his character; he’s extraordinary,” Ancelotti said.

“Vinicius is going to win [the Ballon d’Or], not for what he did tonight, but for what he did last year. These three goals are already going to count for next year’s Ballon d’Or, that’s for sure.”

And ahead of them all are a couple of former Arsenal players.

Emi Martinez comes 18th, rewarded for his performances for Argentina and Aston Villa.

Granit Xhaka, meanwhile is 16th, having been nominated for the first time. It was a remarkable first season at Bayer Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga without losing a single match.

Only Real Madrid have more players nominated for the men’s Ballon d’Or than Arsenal.

Four players for the Gunners made the 30-man shortlist, and it’s Martin Odegaard who has just about got the better of his team-mates.

Flying through the rankings for the Ballon d'Or Feminin.

In terms of the Lionesses, it’s Lauren Hemp in 28th, Lucy Bronze 20th... and now Lauren James 13th.

The Chelsea star is only 23-year-old... she’s going to be on this shortlist for many, many years to come.

Saka ranking confirmed

Monday 28 October 2024 17:00 , Matt Verri

Right, back to the rankings.

Antonio Rudiger next up, in 22nd, and then it’s Bukayo Saka.

The Arsenal star was nominated for the first time last year when he was ranked 24th... it’s three better for him this time.

Would have been significantly higher than that had Arsenal got over the line and won the Premier League.

The list they want to join!

Monday 28 October 2024 16:52 , Matt Verri

Whatever happens tonight, we will get a first-time winner.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are not on the shortlist, having won it 13 times between them since 2008.

Karim Benzema and Luka Modric the only ones to break that dominance, but neither of them have been nominated this time.

Bronze voices frustration

Monday 28 October 2024 16:43 , Matt Verri

It’s one of the biggest nights in the football calendar, but many of the best players in the women’s game will not be in attendance.

That includes the likes of Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp, who are currently on England duty ahead of tomorrow night’s match against South Africa.

Players voiced their frustration last year that the ceremony was taking place during a women’s international break, but a change has not been made this time.

“These barriers being put up in front of us again is very frustrating,” Bronze said last week.

“And not only frustrating that it’s happened, but it obviously happened last year. And it’s like is anybody listening?

“It’s quite alarming that it’s literally a window where everybody goes all over the place. It just seems quite inconsiderate in a way.”

Dias just ahead of Saliba

Monday 28 October 2024 16:33 , Matt Verri

William Saliba made the 30-man shortlist for the first time this season.

The Arsenal defender has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, if not the world. He’s ranked 24th.

Next up is Ruben Dias in 23rd - he was 30th last year. He’ll be right up there by 2027 at this rate...

England duo next up!

Monday 28 October 2024 16:26 , Matt Verri

Moving swiftly through these rankings.

In 26th it’s Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, who has hit the ground running in north London since arriving from West Ham.

And Cole Palmer is ranked 25th, after a sensational first season at Chelsea.

Feels like he’d be much higher on just his individual performances, but Chelsea’s struggles mean he is still a fair bit down the rankings.

First men's rankings revealed

Monday 28 October 2024 16:18

And over on the men’s side...

Mats Hummels and Artem Dovbyk are ranked in a tie for 29th.

The pair are now team-mates at Roma, but it was their performances last season that got them shortlisted.

Hummels reached the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund, while Dovbyk finished as top score in LaLiga for Girona.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo is 28th, just behind PSG midfielder Vitinha.

Monday 28 October 2024 15:54 , Matt Verri

Real Madrid won’t be represented in Paris tonight, but Barcelona certainly will be.

Lamine Yamal one of those who has just landed and it could be a big night for the teenager.

He is on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and surely has a huge chance of winning the Kopa Trophy for the best U21 player.

Real Madrid set to skip ceremony after twist

Monday 28 October 2024 15:44 , Matt Verri

Vinicius Junior has been the big favourite to win the Ballon d’Or tonight, a reward for his stellar performances as Real Madrid won the Champions League and LaLiga last season.

However, reports today suggest that Vinicius is in fact now set to miss out.

It’s claimed that Real Madrid have been told he will not win and are therefore not planning to attend, with Florentino Perez, Carlo Ancelotti and Jude Bellingham among those joining Vinicius in skipping the ceremony.

A dramatic late twist ahead of tonight’s event, with Rodri now the favourite.
