When the Carolina Panthers opted to bench 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, it essentially secured Young's status as a historic draft bust. But Baker Mayfield doesn't exactly see it that way.

Mayfield -- along with Sam Darnold -- were both with the Panthers in 2022 and struggled through a dreadful season with Matt Rhule. Mayfield was released after a 1-5 start to the season, and Darnold eventually took over as the starting quarterback in November. But since both quarterbacks left that situation in Carolina, they have enjoyed success with new teams.

So, maybe this is all a Panthers problem? On Wednesday, Mayfield was asked about the Panthers' decision to bench Young, and the Tampa Bay quarterback offered words of encouragement. He made a point that finding the right situation is essential for each individual quarterback.

What might work for others can have the opposite impact for someone like Young. And in the Panthers' case, it's tough to imagine any quarterback finding success with that roster.

Mayfield made the point to add, "His story is far, far from finished."

We'll have to see if Young's career can actually be salvaged.
