Australia Post has revealed it is hiring 5,000 more Aussies ahead of the holiday season, as it embarks on its biggest parcel delivery in history.

The postal service said it expected more than 3 million parcels to be delivered today after the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, after already delivering 40 million across the month of November.

But in the lead up to Christmas, it will need more hands on deck.

“We’re hiring 5,000 extra people to help deliver for our customers across the country, have chartered 18 freighter flights, and will have 3,000 extra vehicles on the road,” said AusPost executive general manager of deliveries Rod Barnes.

“We also have new automation coming online right across the country in the lead up to the Christmas period to deliver for our customers.”

Barnes said temporary regulatory relief allowed the company to upskill 2,700 posties, with 2,000 now delivering in vans.

McDonald’s to hire 17,400

AusPost isn’t the only company going on a hiring spree in the lead up to Christmas, with fast food chain McDonald’s on the hunt for a further 17,400 staff members before the end of 2020.

The retailer is hiring full-timers, part-timers and casuals across all its venues, including McCafes.

“As one of the country’s largest employers we are very proud to be able to help make a positive difference and provide new opportunities for more than 17,400 Australians into full-time, part-time and casual roles as crew, maintenance, baristas and management,” McDonald’s Australia CEO Andrew Gregory said.
