Aussie tennis newlyweds lose in Adelaide

It wasn't quite the honeymoon double triumph they were hoping for as newlyweds Luke Saville and Daria Saville (nee Gavrilova) both suffered losses at the Adelaide International 2 on Monday.

Daria was brought down in the round of 32 by Croatia's world No.65 Ana Konjuh on Monday, losing 6-2 7-6 (7-4).

Her husband also tasted defeat, with Luke losing his qualifying encounter against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (7-0) 6-2 in a hard-fought battle.

Daria will now turn her attention to the Australian Open after gaining a wildcard for the first major of the year.

The 27-year-old reached a career-high No.20 in the world in 2017, but a rotten run with injuries has seen her ranking dip to No.385.

She won her way through to the main draw of last week's Adelaide International 1, before losing to 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets in the first round.

Luke recently competed for Australia at the ATP Cup and also at the Tokyo Olympics, and will be aiming to fine-tune his doubles game ahead of the Australian Open.

The 28-year-old is currently ranked 23rd in the world in doubles.

Daria and Luke married in December, after first meeting in Mexico in 2009.
