Aussie greats stunned by Aaron Finch's 'mystifying' dismissal

A number of Australian greats have been left stunned by Aaron Finch’s decision not to review his dismissal on Day 4 in Adelaide.

Australia will need to set an Adelaide Oval record if they want to win the first Test against India, having slipped to 1-28 after being set an imposing target of 323 on day four.

Ravichandran Ashwin struck with the final ball of Sunday’s post-lunch session when Aaron Finch was caught at bat-pad for 11, although replays suggested the opener might have been reprieved if he had reviewed.

Finch looked very unsure about the umpire’s decision, consulting with fellow opener Marcus Harris before trudging off.

However hot spot technology didn’t appear to suggest the ball had hit Finch’s glove, as the umpire ruled.

Finch’s decision not to review had commentators scratching their heads.

“If you’re not certain that it has hit your glove you definitely have to refer that,” Ricky Ponting said on Channel 7.

“He may have got away with that if he referred it,” added Glenn McGrath.

Michael Slater was particularly perplexed.

“You send it up, it’s as basic as that,” he said.

“It’s just a really mystifying dismissal.”

Finch successfully reviewed a lbw verdict on 0 in the opening over; ball-tracking replays would have upheld that on-field decision but footage showed Ishant Sharma overstepped and it was a no-ball.
