Fawad Ahmed has undergone gum surgery after he was smashed in the face while bowling in the Pakistan Super League.

The Pakistani-born Australian spinner couldn’t get his hands up in time after Peshawar batsman Imam-ul-Haq cracked a straight drive back towards him.

The ball hit Fawad flush in the face, sending him reeling away in pain.

After spending some time in hospital, the 37-year-old is expected to play in the final for Quetta Gladiators.

It would be a remarkable recovery considering the following image that has emerged.

“Thanks heaps for all the kind messages, wishes and prayers,” Fawad tweeted.

“Surgery went well n hopefully it will heal soon InshaALLAH, Please Remember in ur prayers”.

Fawad retired from first-class cricket recently in a bid to make himself available for more short-form cricket – a last-ditch bid to impress Australian selectors ahead of the World Cup.
